K12 SWP Awards

The project will focus on Construction, Patient Care, and Early Childhood Education Pathways. The focus includes the support of essential collaboration across education systems Alta Vista Innovation (AVI) between the K–12 sector and community colleges (Chaffey College) with involvement from industry businesses and organizations in strengthening CTE courses, programs, and pathways aligned with regional workforce needs. Additionally, AVI will further develop and strengthen high-quality, K–14 CTE course sequences, programs, and pathways that will (1) build foundational career path skills and early career exploration, (2) enable a seamless and successful transition from secondary to postsecondary education within the same or related career paths, (3) lead to completion of industry-valued certificates, or college transfers, (4) prepare students upon completion of education to enter into employment in occupations with a livable wage, (5) identify and close equity gaps by improving access to and completion of high- skill/high-wage CTE opportunities for disproportionately impacted students, (6) facilitate K–12 student exploration and learning opportunities, and (7) contribute toward meeting the projected need for one million completers of CTE programs aligned with the state’s labor market.

Our project focuses on providing more opportunities for students to pursue pathways in Health Care and Social Assistance, Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation, and Information Communication Technologies/Digital Media. We plan to achieve this goal through various outreach activities and informative publications that will help students learn more about these fields. Our aim is to expose students to work-based learning activities, allowing them to gain valuable experience, and provide training on industry-standard equipment. Additionally, CTE educators will have the opportunity to participate in professional development training, which will enable them to better support their students’ learning and career goals.

Beaumont Unified School District’s Culinary Pathway Upgrade and Expansion will expand and enhance the opportunities to relevant industry skills, connect students to work based learning opportunities, and encourage post-secondary learning and certification. By creating a mobile kitchen as an extension of our Culinary classroom, we can increase and diversify the industry standard equipment students will use while integrating elements of business and entrepreneurship. This will support new CTE course development, expansion of both teaching and support staff, and finally allow for an increase in student enrollment into one of the most sought after CTE pathways in the district. The mobile kitchen will provide students the opportunity to learn dynamic skillsets associated with budgeting, marketing, event planning, menu development, all while working with diverse populations throughout our community.

In a technology dependent pathway, outdated equipment and resources limit teachers’ ability to teach relevant industry skills, connect students to work based learning opportunities, and encourage post-secondary learning and certification. The district wide expansions and enhancements in the Digital Media Pathways Upgrade and Expansion will allow for critical technology upgrades which will allow students to learn using industry standard equipment. This will include new video and sound production equipment, editing equipment and software, technology associated with interactive media including but not limited to virtual reality and 3D animation, computers and software for graphic design, as well as the expansion into drone technology which will allow for partnerships with other growing industries in our area including residential and commercial construction, logistics, and law enforcement. New production equipment will allow our students to live-stream events and work with community partners in one of the fastest growing regions in the state.

The aim of this grant is to support the expansion of CTE Engineering & ICT Pathway, along with a Work-Based Learning Continuum. This project will concentrate on the programs offered at Valley View High School and Vista Del Lago High School. It will also build upon the recently acquired Middle School Foundation Academies Planning and Implementation Grants given to Badger Springs Middle School and Landmark Middle School ($25,000 for each middle school). The objective is to increase enrollment and pathway completion rates for the MVUSD Engineering Pathway, which presently stands at 56.78%. Additionally, this grant aims to provide a robust Work-Based Learning Continuum for all MVUSD CTE Pathways.

CTE in RUSD students are not entering and staying on the path to completion into post-secondary endeavors. On average, of students who enter a CTE pathway, only 11% stay on the path and complete the concentrator and capstone courses. These students are neither prepared to stay on the path in college nor qualified to immediately join the workforce and serve the industry, further increasing the growing skills gap. We have identified an equity and access gap in RUSD based on initial research, but the data does not clarify or specify those gaps within and across subgroups of students. Our students need pathway advisement, schedule flexibility, and career awareness to Clarify, Enter, and Stay on the path, earn certification, receive articulated credit, and complete CTE pathways to thrive in the workforce.
