SB 1070

Doing What Matters Initiative in Action: Community Report 2013-2015

Quick Facts:

Lead College/Project Director: Mt. San Jacinto – Joyce Johnson,

Funding Period: January 15, 2014 – December 31, 2016 (Year 1 is a planning year)

Grant Total: $1,474,251

The Inland Empire/Desert Consortium will work to meet the SB1070 grant objectives by bringing the region together to identify best practices, and better identify what programs are being offered as well as what is working and what is not. The region has developed well defined activities in response to the eight objectives of the RFA and they have been vetted with regional members and other key stakeholders. SB1070 establishes the following funding priorities:

  1. Aligning high school and post-secondary CTE Pathways
  2. Increasing industry-recognized certification in high-need sectors
  3. Supporting partnership academies with sustainable higher education and regional industry partnerships
  4. Increasing articulation opportunities in middle and high school
  5. Providing professional development to improve career-oriented academic and technical education
  6. Establishing valid, reliable and stable measures of college and career readiness
  7. Supporting district-wide Linked Learning programs

The overarching goal of this project will be to develop and implement sustainable policies and infrastructure that result in measurable and successful transition of CTE students from high school to postsecondary education and careers. As a region we will:

  1. Request, gather and evaluate data
  2. Create an inventory of collected data
  3. Host special meetings, workshops and trainings such as a regional articulation, dual enrollment and student services meetings
  4. Identify best practices and potentially replicable policies, procedures, and systems that will result in a common approach
  5. Leverage existing relationships, funding and activities
  6. Develop a 2-year implementation plan that builds on existing structures, leverages resources, and regional data collection to build more robust common systems

The consortium will use the planning year to identify programs, solutions and resources that will be used to develop a two year implementation plan to meet the goals of this project through a coordinated regional approach.
