Did you know? As California's unemployment numbers continue to climb, our students must look to new careers and industries as they seek to uncover fresh opportunities in the workplace. While once thriving employment sectors like finance and manufacturing dwindle, there is job growth in health care and education, new hot jobs in information technology, and jobs in energy and the environment are predicted to triple over the next decade. We need to encourage and guide our students by helping them focus on these new opportunities and identify the skills and resources they need to participate in Jobs that Will Rock the Future! To support your students on this journey, identify and share new educational/training programs on your campus as well as areas of job growth in your community. The activity outlined below will help you begin the conversation.
Try this
View the first three to four minutes of this interview, Jobs of the Future, and ask a few questions.
o What industries are growing?
o Why are skills important?
o Where are many Americans getting their education and training?
Distribute Jobs to Rock Your Future activity guide, review the directions, and give students a few minutes to complete the activity.
Discuss and share their responses in small groups or as a class. (Answers: 1/c; 2/g; 3/f; 4/h; 5/a; 6/d; 7/e; 8/b)
o What jobs interest you?
o Why are there so many jobs in health care?
o How can someone get a green job? (Your campus career center can help students with this one.)
Make a list of things students are doing to prepare for the jobs they want.
Assign the online lesson, Jobs to Rock Your Future, for additional ideas and resources.
Add an Experience: We need to help students get the information and resources about the best jobs and the skills needed to get those jobs. Now is the time to inspire and motivate our students to stay in school and earn the certifications and degrees to participate in a robust recovery. Contact your career center and ask them to do a Hot Job or Future Jobs presentation to your class.
