As the economy worsens and textbook prices go up, more and more of our students can't afford to purchase the textbooks they need to be successful in their classes. As educators, the adopters of textbooks, it's up to us to seek creative ways to solve this problem. Let's put our minds together with a panel of publisher's representatives and discuss our options.

Ecotourism is the fastest-growing segment of the global tourism industry.  California boasts some of the most popular tourism destinations in the US, but contains some of the most environmentally-sensitive areas.  The Ecotourism and Community Development Mini-Grant project has created ecotourism curriculum and a certificate program for Monterey Peninsula College which is designed to prepare students for jobs in ecotourism while preserving and enhancing the Monterey Peninsula for future generations.  The project sought the input of ecotourism experts and hospitality operators, and has been designed to be easily replicated at other Community Colleges statewide.

Delivering Courses Via Blackberry: A Mobile Learning Case Study - Andrea Shaw, Pearson Learning Solutions - Fred Farr Forum

Louisiana Community & Technical College (LCTCS) was looking for a way to expand their online learning program. For LCTCS it was particularly important to help remove key top barriers for students in obtaining their degrees--geographic access, cost of higher education, and scheduling conflicts due to present commitments such as employment and child care. This session presents a case study view of how LCTCS worked with Pearson and its resources not only to enhance their existing online learning program but to develop a ground-breaking mobile learning offering available to students via their Blackberry device. Learn how this initiative, involving Pearson CourseConnect and eCollege, went from paper to completion in only 9 months.

A New Focus on Nontraditional Populations & Program Improvement - Perkins IV (Breakout) Oak Shelter

Who are the nontraditional students in Business & Management and Information Technology?  The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (Perkins IV) places an increased emphasis on training students for nontraditional careers. The Act defines a nontraditional career as any career in which fewer than 25% of the employees are of a single gender and holds states and districts accountable for meeting targets to train students for careers that are nontraditional for their gender.  This discussion will help you identify nontraditional programs in TOP Code 05 & 07, and identify strategies for improving participation and completion rates.

Come to listen and to share your thoughts about meeting the challenges of today’s brave new world.
